trees are planted by the Somnium team
Somnium Eden Edition
The presale of Eden Edition has ended. Together we managed to plant a total of 20,000 trees in the period from 06/02/2020 – 08/04/2020! With your help – a total of 14,606 decks were sold – as well as our decision to plant 5,394 additional trees by our own, we did incredible things. Thank you so much!
Project Eden – Planting trees against climate change
Studies show us that climate change can be effectively combated through forestation, provided that it takes place at the right latitudes. Trees reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and generate oxygen, that we breathe. Over 80% of all land species have their homes in our trees. Plants are key ingredients in over 25% of all medicines.
Dreaming is creating. #TeamSomnium
Why are trees so important?
Through photosynthesis, trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and thereby bind the greenhouse gas that is responsible for climate change, among other things. Oxygen is released, which we need for life. Forests absorb the heat of the sun and toxic gases such as nitrogen oxides, ozone and carbon monoxide.
The water balance of our planet is also largely determined by trees. A single oak, for example, absorbs about 40,000 litres of water per year out of the ground through its roots and releases it back into the atmosphere as water vapour. In this way, trees act as filters for our water and cleanse our planet.
Forests provide habitats for more than 80% of all land species. A single tree alone can harbour hundreds of species of insects, fungi, mosses, mammals and birds. Some animal species need tree hollows as hiding places, others live on seeds and nuts, and many plant species can only grow in the shades of other plants.
Due to the destruction of habitat by humans, our planet is in the middle of the sixth mass extinction of plant and animal species in the last 500 million years – 1000 to 10,000 times faster than the natural rate.
Studies show us that climate change can be effectively combated through forestation, provided that it takes place at the right latitudes. The greenhouse gas CO2 is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis and converted with water into biomass and oxygen. This reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. In large cities, trees can reduce the temperature by up to 8 °C.
According to the authors of a study by the Technical University (ETH) of Zurich, the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C by 2050 can undoubtedly be achieved through reforestation. There are currently 2.8 billion hectares of forest on earth, and an additional 900 million hectares could be added, which is roughly the size of the USA.
1 Deck = 1 Planted Tree
Through our project Eden you can become a part of the reforestation of our planet. For every deck that is ordered, we plant a tree where it is needed, in collaboration with Onetreeplanted. This will not cost you a cent more.
The paper used for our cards is FSC certified, the varnish is water-based, the ink is plant-based, the protective plastic around the cards is biodegradable and the tuck box is not packed with plastic, but with a wrapper of recycled paper and a seal of sugar cane.
This project is a pre-sale, which means that the more decks are ordered, the more trees we plant. So please feel free to share this project, forward it to anyone you think might be interested!
After the end of the pre-sale campaign we will start the production of the decks at Cartamundi (Belgium). The production will take 8-14 weeks, after which we will deliver your order directly to your home. You don’t need to worry, we will keep you informed as soon as there are updates.
